Fantastic c.1799 silver New York Officer shoulder belt plate. The engraved eagle is late 18th century army officer's style. The silver shield, with letters NMY, is a separate piece secured by 7 rivets that extend through the plate. The engraved silver front plate is fused to a more substantial silver back plate. The silver tongue and studs are silver soldered and quite possibly secured through the back plate. The eagle design closely resembles both Infantry regiment plates pictured in O'Donnell & Cambell's American Military Belt Plates book on page 24. It resembles plate 17, of this book, even more. With the appearance of this plate, I feel I can state the M, on both the Vermont plate and this plate, stands for Militia. Plate measures 68 mm's x 88.5 mm's in size.
